PURPOSE:To prevent a cutter from wear, by providing such a thread cutting method that cutting along the center line of a crest of the a thread, cutting along walls of the crest and cutting down to the bottom of the crest along the center line are successively made. CONSTITUTION:When a workpiece is cut so as to form a thread having a thread-height K, first to third cutting steps are made by a constant cutting depth (d). The first cutting step is made so that the cutting edge of a cutter 1 is moved along the center line of a crest of a thread to be cut. Then, a second cutting step is made so that the cutting edge is moved along one wall surface of a crest to be cut, and this step is carried out along both wall surface of the crest, repeatedly, until the total cutting depth along each wall surface becomes more than a set value. Thus, after completion of cutting steps IV to XI, the third step is again carried out so that the cutting edge of the cutter 1 is moved again along the center line of the crest to complete the thread cutting.
