In the case of a process for the mechanical construction of masonry walls from blocks, said blocks (24) of each individual course are first of all laid out in a first position in a row (18) and are then laid together. It is proposed to lay out the row (18) of blocks directly on the building site and to apply a layer (89) of mortar on the top side (60) thereof and subsequently to lay the entire row (18) of blocks in the end position in the wall which is to be formed. The apparatus for carrying out the process exhibits a framework (10), a bench (22), onto which a row (18) of blocks can be laid parallel to the wall which is to be erected, a mortar-applying device (61) and a transporting device (31) for the row (18) of blocks. In this arrangement, the framework (10) can be set up directly on the building site on an outer side of the wall which is to be erected, and it borders said outer side. The transporting device (31) projects, when laying the row of blocks, only by a few centimetres beyond the other outer side of the wall which is to be erected. <IMAGE>
