PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of a distortion of a discoid recording medium by withdrawing a head from the surface of the discoid recording medium on the outside of a recording and reproducing region of the discoid recording medium. CONSTITUTION:After the lapse of a prescribed period of time since completion of a recording or reproducing, a head withdrawal signal is outputted from a timer circuit 15, and a drive signal is given to a step motor 14 from a step motor control circuit 16, thus driving reversely the step motor 14 in a stepping way, so that an arm part 7b of a magnetic head carrier 7 is moved in the direction of an arrow. When the stepping drive keeps on giving moreover the arm part 7b, a side surface of the arm part 7b is brought into contact with a detector 20, and a detecting signal outputted from the detector 20 is given to the step motor control circuit 16 to stop the step motor 14. Consequently, the recording head 4 is withdrawn from the surface of a magnetic disk 1 on the outside of the recording and reproducing area of the magnetic disk. By this method, no distortion will be made on a discoid recording medium.
