PURPOSE:To produce fine iron powder having high quality an high yield by drying high carbon iron powder after making slurry by pulverizing in solvent and further executing decarburization and reaction treatment. CONSTITUTION:By pulverizing high carbon iron powder having about 4 wt.% C in the solvent, the fine iron powder having <=30 mum, desirably <=about 10mum grain size is obtd. As the above solvent a water soluble solvent adding corrosion inhibitor is suitable. The fine powder slurry obtd. by pulverizing in wet-state is dried in the temp. range of above 50-150 deg.C. Then, the oxygen content in the dry atmosphere in accordance with the aimed carbon in the iron powder is varied in the range of 0-30%. After that, the dried iron is heated and decar burized in the temp. range of 700-850 deg.C. In order to removing the remained oxygen after decarbontzation, hydrogen reduction is executed and the fine iron powder having the desired carbon content and micron order of grain size is obtd. at high yield.
