The workholding fixture with retractable clamping jaw (4) for clamping surfaces (1) of machine tools is independent of tolerances of the clamping depths of clamping edges (3) and permanently form-fitting, even when abraded by wear. The clamping jaw (4) can be moved by motor power between an extended clamping position outside a housing and a retracted rest position inside the housing, in directions parallel and perpendicular to the clamping surface (9); in the clamping position, it can be clamped with respect to the housing (6) by means of a clamping wedge (10) that can also be moved by motor power and acts on the rear of the clamping jaw (4). The clamping wedge (10) can move in a direction that forms with the plane of the clamping surface (9) an angle ( beta ) whose vertex points in the direction of advance for clamping, with the angle ( alpha ) between the abutting wedge surfaces (13, 14) of the clamping wedge (10) and of the clamping jaw body (5) having its vertex pointing in the same direction but being smaller than the first angle ( beta ) (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
