Process for the preparation of disulphides from thiols, comprising oxidizing the thiol in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of a substantially water-immiscible organic solvent. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and/or a metal catalyst, suitably copper, and the oxidation effected by oxygen or iodine.
