PURPOSE:To extract a character string even when the characters or the character and a graphic are intersected or superposed, by extracting the character string from the extraction of line segments possible to be character candidates and the arrangement of those line segments out of drawing information. CONSTITUTION:A scan input part 12 scans a drawing 11 upward and downward, and reads the whole of the drawing 11 completely as the drawing information. An image processing part 13 outputs the start and end points of the line segment to a coordinate string data storage part 14 as coordinate data and vector data. A control and arithmetic processing part 15 sets a first extracting area which encloses the periphery of the line segment setting a short line segment called from the coordinate string data storage part 14 first as reference. The line segment not being extracted, a part of which is included in the first extracting area, is extracted out of the short line segments stored in the coordinate string data storage part 14. The first extracting area is expanded in a direction including the line segment extracted newly, and it is set as a second extracting area. A character size is set in prescribed length in a direction perpendicularly to the expanded direction, and the line segment extracted newly is compared with the character string size.
