PURPOSE:To predict development of hole in a refractory and to contribe safety of an equipment and workers by detecting outer circumferential face temp. of a ladle refining furnace by a radiation thermometer and sounding an alarm in case of becoming to out of the range of pre-stored prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:At the time of executing refining operation heating by electrodes 31-33 while blowing Ar gas from lower part after receiving the molten steel A into the ladle refining furnace 11 and descending the cover part 22, the temps. at the outer circumferential face are detected by the radiation thermometers 41-43 arranged as facing to the outer circumferential face of the furnace 11. Then, the absolute values or rising speeds of the above temps. are operated by an arithmetic unit with alarm of lump, buzzer, etc., and in case they become to out of the range of the pre-stored prescribed value in the unit 51, it is set so as to sound the alarm. By this alarm, the development of the hole in the furnace 11 refractory 22 can be predicted, and necessary treatment for safety of the workers and the equipment can be executed.
