A compact system for the hygienic treatment of sewage sludge comprises essentially a vertical heat-insulating tank (11) with two stirrers (43, 45), several pipes, valves and pumps and takes up very little space. The tank (11) contains three superimposed chambers (17, 15, 13). During operation, the sewage sludge in the reactor chamber (13) is circulated by the pump (3) and aerated by the injector (37). The sludge is heated to a temperature above 60°C and digested by the action of thermophilic bacteria. From time to time, a batch of hot sludge is fed from the reactor chamber (13) into the retention chamber (17) where it is degassed for about half an hour. Then fresh sludge is admitted into the chamber (15) and the stirrers (43, 45) are set in motion. Heat exchange occurs through the wall (12). The fresh sludge is thereby heated before it is conveyed to the reactor chamber (13) and the hot sludge cooled before it is conveyed to the digestion stage (65).
|
