PURPOSE:To easily peel off and remove floating substance caught by filter mediums and repeat the filtering and backwashing processes endlessly by using freely expandable filter mediums and varying the bore diameters between filter mediums or width of slits at the time of filtering and backwashing. CONSTITUTION:Expandable mediums are put in the natural or compressed state at the time of filtering, and stretched or natural state at the time of backwashing. For example, filter mediums 7 consist of expandable fibers 1 as warps and fixed fibers 2 as woofs, and bores 5 between fibers can be adjusted optionally in compliance with the sizes of floating substance 3. The bores 5 between fibers are deformed by stretching expandable fibers 1 in the longitudinal direction to peel off floating substances 3 caught in the bores 5 and said substances are washed away by the backwashing water, backwasing air or the like.
