PURPOSE:To inform the necessity of inspection to a user and to prevent the transmission of pictures inferior on picture quality by executing the reading scan of a white board with preceding a reading action and displaying a black signal if the black signal is mixed. CONSTITUTION:The white board 31 sets in an original reading position and a control circuit 14 executes the reading scan of the white board with preceding the reading of an original 21. Namely, the light beam of a light source 11 is projected to the white board 31 and the reflected light is read by a reading sensor 12 via a mirror 15, then an analog picture signal PIXA is outputted. A binarization circuit 13 converts the analog picture signal PIXA into a white and black digital signal PIXD and transmits it to the control circuit 14. The control circuit 14 monitors the digital picture signal PIXD and makes an abnormality display circuit 32 actuate if the black picture elements are mixed. Thus, the necessity of inspection of a reading mechanism part can be displayed for the user and dusts, etc., covering the mirror can be removed by the user.
