A carriage movable on rails (14) in the pool bottom, and a transverse second carriage (61) mounting monitoring instruments (65) and movable on a transverse beam movable on the first carriage. A drive system moves the beam stepwise on the first carriage and the second carriage on the beam. The first carriage is pref. moved by drive rollers with toothed wheels combined with a rack connected to the rails, with a fixed stroke hydraulic actuator driving the rollers via a rack and pinion system, with a clutch coupled to a brake for the rollers.
