An atmospheric gas burner has cooling rods (3) associated with its burner tube (1) at intervals to reduce the flame temperature and thus the formation of nitrogen oxides. Flue gas is fed in through the hollow cooling rods (3) to reduce the oxygen partial pressure of the secondary air. This results in a further reduction in nitrogen oxide formation. <IMAGE>
