The invention relates to an apparatus for forming multi-layer stacks of packages or the like on pallet-shaped carriers, having a vertical conveyor adjacent to the pallet, a vertically displaceable package support track projecting over the top side of the pallet stack, the vertical conveyor, which is formed by circulating hoists, for example chain hoists, forming a link table surface by means of horizontally running intermediate sections of the hoists; the invention proposes, in order to achieve an in particular structurally simple design, that the link table surface (96) is formed from individual link plates (95) which are arranged one behind the other in a row and are carried by bars (90-94) which extend in each case between two chain hoists (85-89), in such a manner that one plate end (97) sits, in a positive-locking, articulated manner, on the bar and the other plate end (98) is carried by the bar in the direction of travel of the hoists with play. <IMAGE>
