PURPOSE:To produce benzophenones useful for industrial purposes, by reacting benzene with a benzoyl halide at a temperature above a specific level in the presence of a trivalent rear earth metal halide compound in the reaction system, thereby proceeding the reaction at a relatively high rate of reaction. CONSTITUTION:A (substituted)benzene is acylated with a (substituted)benzoyl halide to obtain benzophenones (e.g. benzophenone and 4,4'-dichlorobenzopheno ne). The reaction is carried out in the presence of catalyst consisting of a triva lent rare earth metal halide compound (especially preferably the rare earth metal is lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, etc., and the compound is an anhy drous rare earth metal trichloride compound) at >=100 deg.C (especially preferably 120-250 deg.C). The catalyst can be repeatedly used. The produced benzophenones are useful as intermediates for perfumery fixer, polymerization inhibitor, ultravio let absorber, photopolymerization initiator and polymer, etc. |
