Separator comprises a tank, ballasted and stabilised to float one way up and partly immersed with the waterline moving up and down the outer surface with the swell. A rise in the waterline is used to press open a non-return inlet flap valve in the shell of the tank. A fall in the waterline subsequently presses open a non-return outlet flap valve to discharge purified water while pollutants are retained within the tank. In flowing through the tank between inlet and outlet valves, the water can be screened to retain solids. It also follows a flow path via baffles and/or internal non-return valve(s) to gravity-separate liqs., semi-liqs. and residual solids from water directed to the outlet valve. A string of modular, floating separators can be used to form a marine barrage to arrest and mop up an oil slick etc. The separator is used to remove pollutants from the surface or near the surface of the sea. A barrage of the separators will recover major spillages of hydrocarbon fuels, etc. |
