An auxiliary sliver is intermittently fed into the main sliver on a doffer (23) to be taken with the main sliver by the needles of a circular machine whereby pattern effects can be produced in a high pile fabric by having tufts of fibres contrasting with that of the main pile fibres incorporated in the fabric. The main sliver is fed and delivered to the needles of the machine through three sets of gear feed rollers such as (40, 41) Fig. 1, not shown, which are driven from the machine drive through gearing to deliver the sliver on to a card roller (24) from which it is transferred to the doffer (23) feeding it to the needles. The main sliver feeding mechanism is as described in Specification 1,000,455. Superimposed on the doffer is an auxiliary sliver feed mechanism comprising a pair of gear feed rollers (83, 84) Fig. 3, not shown, to which the auxiliary sliver is delivered from a nozzle (91). The roller (83) is driven by a gear wheel (94) on the end of its shaft engaging groups of teeth of a wheel (96) to impart intermittent rotation to the gear wheel (94) and thereby rollers (83, 84). The gear wheel (96) is driven by a belt drive (108) from a pulley (99) Fig. 2, not shown, received on the shaft on the main sliver feed roller (41) to rotate therewith. Consequently the auxiliary sliver is intermittently fed to the doffer (23) and is brought into engagement with and taken by the needles together with the main sliver. In a multifeed machine adjacent carding heads may be out of phase so that a fibre of the auxiliary slivers are presented to the needles at different times to enable an overall pattern effect to be achieved. |
