PURPOSE:To prevent swelling of a plate and coming off of an active material by filling and covering between a positive plate and a negative plate and circumference of a plate group by a porous rigid layer comprising electrochemically inactive inorganic powder and an acid resistant inorganic binder. CONSTITUTION:Al2O3, water, and monobasic aluminum phosphate which is an inorganic binder are mixed to form slurry. Plates 2 and 4 are made by filling an active material in lead alloy grids by conventional procedure and drying them. A space holding frame is used between positive and negative plates to form a plate group, then the plate group is accommodated in a container 1. The slurry is poured, and filled between positive and negative plates and in the circumference of the plate group, and a rigid layer 6 is formed to bond together. Therefore, electrolyte is easy to diffuse due to porous structure of the rigid layer, and swelling of the plate and coming off the active material are effectively suppressed and battery life is increased. |
