PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound in high yield, by using iodines, irons and antimonies as a catalyst in chlorinating 4-chloronitrobenzene to produce the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:4-Chloronitrobenzene is chlorinated in the presence of (A) iodine or a compound thereof (preferably iodine, iron iodide, iodine chloride or hydrogen iodide), (B) iron or a compound thereof (preferably ferrous chloride or ferric chloride) or antimony or a compound thereof (preferably antimony pentachloride or antimony trichloride), preferably at 20-120 deg.C temperature to suppress formation of dichloro-4-chloronitrobenzenes as a by-product and afford the aimed 3-chloro-4-chloronitrobenzene which is useful as an intermediate for medicines.agricultural chemicals in high yield and purity. |
