PURPOSE:To obtain a thermoplastic star block copolymer in an economically advantageous manner in good reproducibility, by polymerizing a polymeric activator having at least three terminal functional groups with a lactam in the presence of a specified main catalyst and a promotor. CONSTITUTION:A polymeric activator having at least three terminal functional groups is polymerized with a lactam by using at least one compound selected from among an alkali metal, an alkali metal hydride, an organo-alkali metal compound and a Grignard compound as a main catalyst and an organoaluminum compound as a promotor to obtain the purpose copolymer. Said polymeric activator has a star structure in which at least three functional groups capable of accelerating the anionic polymerization of the lactam are situated on terminals. Further, this activator itself can serve as a comonomer and forms part of the blocks of the star block copolymer.
