Swinging of a load 12, Fig. 1, supported by a ship's crane 11, is prevented by a braked gimbal mounting 53 which supports a guide 39 for a lifting cable. The mouth 68, Fig. 2, of the guide 39 mates with a conical projection 41 on a load-supporting plate 40. The load is thus rigidly attached to the guide 39, swinging of which can be controlled by the crane operator in two mutually perpendicular planes. The gimbal mounting is supported on a jib 20, Fig. 1, pivoted to a luffable telescopic boom 16, 18. The cable 30 is taken in by a ram 31 and pulleys 35, 42. The gimbal brakes are hydraulically operated. Guide member 39 may be provided with a smaller mouth with a plurality of legs, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
