PURPOSE:To prevent smear with simple constitution by shutting a light to a solidstate image pickup element during transmission/read of a signal charge through the use of stops. CONSTITUTION:The undesired electric charge stored in a transmission section 3 to be cleared (inversely transferred at a high frequency) is fed to a drain section 4 and eliminated. Then the undesired charge from a photodetection section 2 is fed to a transfer section 3 and the light from an object is exposed via an stops 7, the corresponding signal charge is stored and at the same ting the remaining and undesired charge is inversely transferred to the said drain section 4 and cleared from the transfer section 3. Then the signal charge is transferred from the photodetector section 2 to the transfer section 3, the stops 7 begins to close at the same time, no electric charge is transferred in the transfer section 3 but stays there. The stops 7 is closed further and the CCD 1 is completely shut, the signal charge is read from the transfer section 3 by 1/60sec and the video signal is read out. Thus, the occurrence of smear is prevented.
