PURPOSE:To obtain exact and bright color display by sealing liquid crystals between plural pairs of electrodes facing oppositely to each other with different distances, and applying electric voltages to each space of the plural pairs of electrodes so as to obtain a fixed intensity of the electric field. CONSTITUTION:Plural pairs of transparent electrode 22A, 22B,... comprising ITO layers and an orientation layer 23 comprising PVA are formed on a principal plane of a transparent glass substrate 21. A transparent insulative layer 25 comprising SiO2 having partly changed thickness is formed on the principal plane of another transparent glass substrate 24. Transparent electrodes 26A, 26B,... comprising ITO layers are formed thereon, and an orientation film 27 is formed on the transparent electrodes. The substrate 21 is arranged to face oppositely to the substrate 24 through a spacer 28, and ferroelectric liquid crystals 30 are sealed therebetween. Polarizing plates 31, 32 are provided to the outside of the substrates 21, 24 with directions of polarization crossing vertically to each other. Electric voltages are applied across the transparent electrodes 22A and 26A, 22B and 26B,... adjusting the electric field intensities to be generated to a same intensity. Thus, the orientation of liquid crystal molecules are varied depending on the electric voltage, and bright color display is obtd.
