A lathe comprises an indexable tool-holder store 16 and a slide 5 carrying a tool-post 11, the store being able to pass over the post in its end position. The cutting and tool-changing movements are controlled by camstrips 8 co-operating with switches 9. The saddle 5 carries a cross-slide 10 carrying a tool-holder W 1 on the tool-post 11. The store 16 is rotated on an adjustably-mounted base 13 through worm gearing by a motor 15 which also drives a cam drum in a casing 13b. In operation, the saddle 5 is retracted to cause a plunger 34, Fig. 4, on the post 11 to engage a stop 36 on the base 13. Continued movement of the saddle causes teeth 33 in the plunger to rotate a pinion 32 on a nut 30, Fig. 3, to release a locking bolt 24, 25. A lever 37 on the post is then engaged by the plunger and is moved to advance a pin 39 which engages the holder W 1 and causes teeth 22 thereon to be disengaged from teeth 21 on the post. At the same time, wedges 44 lift the holder on to supports 17 on the store where it is secured by plungers 45. The store is indexed to any position where it is located by a spring-pressed ball 48. Advance of the saddle causes the new holder to be taken up and locked, the plunger 34 being rendered effective by a retaining catch 35 operated mechanically or by a solenoid. Alternatively, the plunger 34 may be mounted on the base 13. In modifications, the store is moved instead of the saddle, or each may be moved, or the store may be moved linearly. The holders may be clamped hydraulically or electrically. |
