Gas-liquid contact apparatus comprises cylinder 3 housing hollow rotatable shaft 4, a series of vertically spaced discs 5, 51 &c. secured to the shaft for rotation therewith by collars 21, 211 &c., each disc comprising a spiral porous wall 10 and upper and lower horizontal supports 6, 61 &c., and annular liquid receiving gutters 8, 81 &c., disposed between the cylinder wall and the circumference of each disc to collect liquid falling from the periphery of the disc and return it via pipes 9, 91 &c., to the centre of the next lower disc. Liquid is introduced into the top of shaft 4 and passes into uppermost disc 5 through opening 22 in collar 21, plate 7 being provided to prevent further downflow of liquid. Rotation of axis 4 projects the liquid under centrifugal action through the pores of spiral wall 10, in cross-current contact with gas introduced at 1 rising up the cylinder. Liquid striking the cylinder wall is collected by gutters 8, 81 &c., discharged by pipes 9, 91 &c., at the axis of the next lower disc and finally withdrawn at 11, while gas is withdrawn at 2. Thus local cross-current gas-liquid contact and overall countercurrent contact is effected.
