PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain a perfluorocarboxylic acid useful as a fluorine based surfactant or intermediate therefor, by reacting an acetylene derivative with a perfluoroalkyl iodide in the presence of an enzyme. CONSTITUTION:One equiv. perfluoroalkyl iodide expressed by formula I [Rf is perfluoroalkyl group of formula II (m is 1-30) which may be branched] and 0.01-1 equiv. acetylene derivative, such as 1-octyne, are added to a solvent containing water. The enzyme having metallic ions as a prosthetic group (e.g. urease having Ni) is then added to provide an enzymic reaction solution. A surfactant, as necessary, is subsequently added to this reaction solution and reacted at 0-55 deg.C while stirring or shaking to form a perfluorocarboxylic acid in the reaction solution.
