Temperature control of peat stacks to avoid energy losses and ignition has thus far been carried out from the ground by means of visual monitoring or by sample measurements of the temperature. With the method according to the invention, the stacks are imaged by means of a heat-sensitive imaging device so that the stack areas with different temperatures are imaged in different colors. The correct color-temperature correlations are obtained by calibration based on sample measurements of temperature. Imaging can be carried out from the air, in which this represents a very rapid, reliable and accurate method to monitor the temperature in peat stacks. <IMAGE>
