PURPOSE:To improve the operability of an engine in a low load operation range by driving a mechanical type supercharger in the predetermined low load engine operation range and alleviating an engine load due to the supercharger when an engine abnormality is detected in the predetermined low load range. CONSTITUTION:An engine has a mechanical type supercharger 'A' driven with an engine output shaft and a clutch means 'B' for cutting off a drive connection between the supercharger 'A' and the engine output shaft. In this case, there is provided a means 'C' for driving the supercharger 'A' in the lower load engine operation range. Also, another means 'D' is provided for detecting any abnormal condition of the engine in the predetermined low load operation range. Furthermore, another means 'E' is provided for alleviating a load on the engine due to the supercharger 'A', when the means 'D' detects the abnormal condition of the engine. According to the aforesaid constitution, it becomes possible to evade the output drop and the like of the engine due to the driving of the supercharger 'A' in the predetermined low load operation range, and to operate the supercharger 'A' in an operation range at a load as low as practicable.
