PURPOSE:To obtain a physiologically active peptide on an industrial scale at a low cost, by reacting amino acids or peptides having protected amino group, etc., with an amino acid having protected carboxyl group in the presence of carboxypeptidase P as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A peptide is produced by enzymatic method by reacting (A) an amino acid or peptide optionally having protected amino group, etc., or their reactive derivative at carboxyl group with (B) an amino acid having optionally protected carboxyl group in the presence of (C) carboxypeptidase P as a catalyst at pH 6.0 taking advantage of the capability of the enzyme to form acyl enzyme intermediate between the substrate by the esterase activity of the enzyme. If necessary, the protecting group is eliminated from the reaction product.
