PURPOSE:To prevent electric short-circuit between an upper and lower electrode substrates and to elevate mass productivity of a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element without impairing the characteristics of the display element by providing an inorganic thin film insulating layer onto a glass substrate provided with a transparent electrode pattern. CONSTITUTION:Silica particles 5 are interposed in a space between confronting glass substrates 1, 2 provided with transparent electrodes 3, 4 of indium oxide on each surface of the glass substrates. The periphery of the glass substrates are fixed with an epoxy resin adhesive 6, and ferroelectric liquid crystals 7 are inserted into the space between each substrate. Further, an inorganic thin film having >=10 dielectric constant is formed on a surface where the substrates 1, 2 contact with the liquid crystals 7. The inorganic thin film insulating layer of high dielectric constant is formed to a film by the metal alkoxide process.
