PURPOSE:To efficiently execute working such as edition by automatically setting up a display scale capable of displaying the whole image on the display screen of a picture display device based on the number of display picture elements in the display device and the number of picture elements in an image to be displayed. CONSTITUTION:At first, the size of an original to be displayed is determined, paper size is decided by an automatic original carrier device and the decided result is sent from an image reader 21 to a CPU 1. Then, the CPU 1 refers a paper size table included in itself to finds out the number of vertical picture elements and the number of horizontal picture elements. Then, vertical and horizontal reduction ratios are found out from the display picture element capacity of the display device and the whole reduction ratio is found out based on a difference between the vertical and horizontal reduction ratios. A reference display address on the display screen corresponding to the display reduction ratio is referred from a paper size table, the reference address is set up on a start position and data sent from an image reader 21 are written in a CRT memory 16 based on the set reduction ratio. A CRT controller 15 displays the whole image on the center of the display screen of a CRT 2.
