PURPOSE:To improve floating stability and abrasion resistance, to miniaturize a device and make it light weight and to make it into light load, by forming the width of a floating force generating plane in a narrow shape by constituting the medium confronting part of two floating rails in a form where a staged form and an inclined form are used commonly. CONSTITUTION:A pair of floating rails 32 and 33 of a slider 31 on whose air inflow terminal an inclined plane 34 is provided are formed in such a way that both edge parts in the length direction of each floating plane are cut, for example, in depth <=1mum, and its center part is formed in a high staged shape 35. Furthermore, the inclined shape 36 is formed by cutting the both edge parts at around 30 deg. leaving a cut low stage part of about 20mum, and by suppressing the generation of the floating force at the low stage part, the fluctuation of a floating quantity due to dispersion of the depth of stages can be suppressed. By constituting a device in such a way, it is possible to narrow the width of the generating plane of the floating force of the floating rails 32 and 33 without damaging the providing area of a thin film magnetic head element, and to improve the floating stability and the abrasion resistance of the medium, and also, to miniaturize the device and make it light weight and to make it into the light load.
