Heat is recovered from gas containing blowpipe beads, by contacting it with the heating surfaces of a heat-exchanger (2). The gas temp. in front of the heat-exchanger is reduced below the eutectic temp. of the beads, by blending the gas loaded with the beads, in front of the heat-exchanger, with a cycle stream of solid particles sepd. from the gas after leaving the heatexchanger. Solidified material from the blowpipe beads is used as solid particles. Other solid particles are blended with the gas in front of the heat-exchanger.
