PURPOSE:To quickly set an air fuel ratio to a prescribed value by changing the set air fuel ratio in accordance with a difference between a target air fuel ratio and the present air fuel ratio when the difference is small and changing the set air fuel ratio by a quantity corresponding to the changing rate of the present air fuel ratio when the difference is large. CONSTITUTION:A target air fuel ratio is designated by (A/F)0, the present air fuel ratio (A/F)1 and an injection quantity before air fuel ratio control tau1. The subsequent injection quantity is determined by correcting a quantity corresponding to the error of the air fuel ratio at a time when an injection quantity tau0 is injected by the accompanying expression I again by the expression I. Since ten and several seconds are required until the result of a new air fuel ratio tauis obtained at this time, a changing rate therefor is observed and the subsequent injection quantity tau0 is determined by the accompanying expressions II and III. An air fuel ratio (A/F)T in the expression III is the one after T seconds from the previous air fuel ratio (A/F)n-1.
