PURPOSE:To provide an optically active ethylenically unsaturated monomer which can produce a polymer useful as a carrier for catalyst, a packing for chromatography, etc., by introducing a specific radical-polymerizable substituent into 6-aminopenicillanic acid. CONSTITUTION:6-Aminopenicillanic acid and its acyl derivative which are fermentation products are used as raw material, and an ethylenically unsaturated group is introduced into the 6- and/or 3-positions of the penicillanic acid skeleton. Thereby, an optically active ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the formula (wherein A is S, SO or SO2; X and Y are H, alkyl, acyl, etc.: and Z is alkoxy, alkylamino, hydroxyl, or silyloxy; provided that at least one of X and Z is an alkenyl derivative) is produced. An optically active polymer can be produced by cleaving the ethylenically unsaturated bond in the group X or Z of this monomer to polymerize the monomer.
