NEW MATERIAL:A 6,7-dichloro-2psubstituted-thiomethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran expressed by the formula [R represents lower alkyl, (substituted)phenyl or naphthyl]. EXAMPLE:6,7-Dichloro-2-phenylthiomethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran. USE:An intermediate for a 6,7-dichloro-2,3,-dihydrobenzofuran based compound useful for a hypotensive uragogue with uricosuric action. PREPARATION:A 6-allyl-2,3-dichlorophenol is reacted with a sulfenyl chloride expressed by the formula RSCl preferably in an anhydrous condition at 0 deg.C - room temperature for several min - several hr. The resultant product is then treated with an alkali (preferably potassium carbonate, etc.) to carry out cyclization.
