PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in picture quality even if the band of a luminance signal is wide, by providing a control means of the degree of separation between the luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal and separating signals in the horizontal direction at the time of detecting the luminance signal having a high-frequency vertical component and separating them with a line memory at the time of detecting the luminance signal which has not a high-frequency vertical component. CONSTITUTION:The output of a low-pass filter 2 is supplied to a one-line delay circuit 101 and an adder 103. The adder 103 multiplies the output of the one-line delay circuit 101 by 1/2 and subtracts outputs, which are obtained by multiplying the signal before one line delay and the two-line delayed signal by 1/4 respectively, from said 1/2-multiplied output to detect a vertical high-band component. The detected high-band component is inputted to an absolute value circuit 104. Since the output of the adder 103 is allowed to pass the absolute value circuit 104 to control the gain of an amplifier 105, the component in the horizontal high band part and in the vertical low band part of the luminance signal is attenuated by the amplifier 105. Thus, the mixed components which cause the deterioration in picture quality are suppressed.
