To reduce the noise radiated by the surface of sheet-metal housings (1.1, 1.2), especially those with a flat, approximately oval cross-section, which are used, in particular, in systems for silencing and/or cleaning the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, the opposite parts of the housing surfaces, which have a relatively shallow curvature and are therefore prone to severe vibration, are braced relative to one another. For this purpose, use is made, for example, of a frame formed by welding (7) together two parts (5.1, 5.2), this frame resting snugly against the housing surfaces prone to severe vibration and being welded (8) to them. <IMAGE>
