Arrangement of a sailing boat for trimming a mainsail (4) fastened to the mast (2), with a swivelling boom (8) whose boom end (7) is connected to the sail's clew (5). The boom (8) also serves as a downhaul, and has a pivot guide (11) independent of the mast (2), whose swivelling axis (I) is aft of the axis of rotation (II) of the mast (2) by the distance (a). Thus, when the boom (8) swivels, the distance of its horse (7) from the mast axis (II) alters so that when the boom (8) is slackened off this distance is smallest, but greatest when close hauled, corresponding to the trimming tension exerted on the afterleech. <IMAGE>
