PURPOSE:To make a cross section shape noncircular by making the inner size of a drum smaller than the glass raw tube diameter, giving a gap on the drum mating face during the winding operation, and making the gap zero after the winding is completed. CONSTITUTION:A winding drum is constituted of two drums 5, 5'. When the winding is started, a gap with a size g1 is given to the mating face between the drums 5, 5'. The size g1 is set so that the size d1 between the drums 5, 5' where a glass tube is inserted is made the size approximate to the raw tube diameter of the glass tube. After the winding is completed, the drums 5, 5' are moved in the axial direction and pressed to make the size g1 to 0mm. Accordingly, the cross section shape of the glass tube can be made noncircular.
