PURPOSE:To increase a moving speed of a moving base, and to remarkably shorten the reading time by providing a reading means on the moving base, executing thinned-out reading at the time of going travel, and reading this thinned-out part at the time of a returning travel. CONSTITUTION:A thermosensible transfer ink tape cassette on a moving base 10 is exchanged for a cassette 7, and an original 20 is inserted from a paper feed port 19 and set to a platen. After a read range designated, reading is started by the operation of starting key. In this case, the moving base 10 raises the head, and the original 20 irradiated by a lamp 3 is read by an image sensor 1. At this time, thinned-out read is executed, and when the image sensor 1 exceeds a preferable read start position, reading is discontinued and the base 10 is travelled in reverse. From a read start position at the time of returning travel, a part which is not read at the time of the going travel is read, and when said sensor exceeds the read start position at the time of the going travel, reading is discontinued and one line feed (original feed) is executed.
