PURPOSE:To increase the machining range of a workpiece and simplify the moving structure of a tool by enabling a machining unit to be moved in any direction of an X-axis, a Y-axis, and a Z-axis and each holding mechanism to perform angular displacement around a vertical axis. CONSTITUTION:One of tools T1-T8 is selected based on the detected information of a workpiece W before it is fixed and mounted on the spindle 26 of a machining unit 6. Then, the pressing parts 44b, 45b of a holding mechanism 9 are depressed to release the holding condition of a holder 53, while both holding members 44, 45 are further rotated upward to positions in which the advance of the unit 6 to a machining position WP is not hindered. And, by further operating an X-axis motor 22, the unit 6 is advanced to the position WP and a motor 25 is operated to start the machining of a work-piece W. At this time, the unit 6 is placed on a liftable table 5, which is placed on a slide table 3 which is movable in a Z-axis direction and, therefore, the unit 6 is movable in any direction of the X, Y, and Z axes, enabling effective machining of a workpiece W which is in a fixed condition over a wide range.
