1,234,955. Fatty acid ester resins. W. DORST. 7 June, 1968, No. 27309/68. Heading C3R. An aqueous solution or dispersion of a fatty acid ester is prepared by reacting (A) one or more saturated polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof with (B) a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a fatty acid derived from a drying or semi-drying oil and containing free hydroxyl groups, in such proportions that there is at least one unesterified hydroxyl group in (B) per molecule of (A) until a partial polycarboxylic acid ester of acid number 25À90 is formed and thereafter neutralizing at least 70% of the free carboxyl groups with a base. The partial ester (B), (i) contains more than 50% by weight fatty acid radicals, (ii) is free from ether groups originating from polyalkylene glycol, (iii) has an acid number below 10 and (iv) contains, on average, less than three radicals per molecule derived from a fatty acid. In the examples the partial ester (B) is formed from (a) pentaerythritol, phthalic anhydride, linseed oil fatty acid and soya bean oil fatty acid, (b) pentaerythritol, phthalic anhydride, glycerol, succinic anhydride and linseed oil fatty acid, (c) trimellitic anhydride glycerol and linolic acid, (d) pentaerythritol, phthalic anhydride, fumaric acid and linseed oil and (e) pentaerythritol, linseed oil and toluene diisocyanate to obtain urethane linkages. The partial ester is reacted with phthalic anhydride or succinic anhydride and the partial ester is then neutralized with triethylamine or ammonia. |
