What is proposed is a device, connectable to the shaft of an existing winding apparatus (10), for making a temporary clamping connection between a spreading body (3), which is an integral part of this apparatus and which cooperates with longitudinally directed pressure pieces (1) movable radially relative to the longitudinal axis of the spreading body (3) as a result of the loading of pressure-medium cushions (6) arranged within the spreading body (3), and a material web (7), especially a sheet-metal strip or a material package, during the winding or unwinding or transport of the workpiece. The spreading body (3) can be attached to the existing winding apparatus (10), and, when the spreading body is in the attached state, a continuous central bore (3b) arranged in the spreading body (3) receives the drive shaft (9, 9') of the winding apparatus (10).
