[Also in Division B1] Epoxidized unsaturated fatty esters and oils and other unsaturated compounds are prepared in a continuous process by blending with an organic per acid to epoxidize the compound and convert the per acid to the carboxylic acid, and reducing the mixture to a thin film of large surface at between 60‹ and 200‹ C. to flash off the low boiling components and recover the epoxidized product. The reaction mixture may be put through a back-mix still-pot reaction zone, with at least a portion of the mixture being withdrawn, and a further amount of unsaturated and epoxy compounds blended in the still-pot zone, the withdrawn reaction mixture is then passed through a non-recirculating traverse reaction zone the two zones being at between 50‹ and 150‹ C. and under a pressure sufficient to maintain the liquid phase. In a preferred embodiment using fatty esters, the per acid is added incrementally and two backmix recirculating zones are used. The product is passed over one or two thin film evaporation zones to remove the low-boiling acid component, water or other low-boiling solvent being added to aid the stripping. Examples describe the epoxidation of soyabean, linseed, corn, and cottonseed oil with peracetic acid and hexadecene-1 with peracetic acid. Many unsaturated compounds which may be epoxidized are listed and a suitable apparatus is described.</p> |
