PURPOSE:To obtain a highly accurate, simple, and inexpensive detector, by detecting which main detecting electrode faces a main electrode by phase discriminating circuits, and detecting the relative displacement quantity of a member. CONSTITUTION:When one member 7 is displaced in the direction of one end of the other member 1, a first main detecting electrode 12a faces a first main electrode in an overlapped manner, and remaining main detecting electrodes 12b, 12c... are deviated from the main electrode and do not face it. As a result, the electrostatic capacity of a first capacitor 16 in the first order becomes large. Then, the delay quantity of a pulse in a first delay circuit 15a in the first order becomes larger than the delay quantity of a pulse in a paired second delay circuit 17a in the first order. The phase of the pulse from the first delay circuit 15a lags from the phase of the pulse from the second delay circuit 17a. An output is sent to a counter circuit 21 from a first phase discriminating circuit 20a. Since the electrostatic capacity of the remaining first capacitors 16 remains small, outputs are not sent out of remaining phase discriminating circuits 20b, 20c....
