The total lift of the hydraulic electrode drive is less than half the total electrode travel. When the hydraulic drive reaches one of its end positions, limit switches actuate an additional electric motor drive which lifts the whole electrode yoke including hydraulic drive, until the voltmeter - and ammeter control system activates the hydraulic system. The electric drive also takes over in emergencies, e.g. when the charge collapses around the electrode during the first melting period and causes a short-circuit.
