A hydraulic centrifugal separator, in particular as a hydrocyclone, for treating sludges and waste waters (effluents), in particular for separating off impurities, has, at the upper end, an inlet and an outlet orifice and, at the bottom conical end, an underflow nozzle which can be adjusted to fit. The cross-sectional area of the underflow nozzle (4) can be adjusted. Adjustment of the cross-sectional area of the underflow nozzle (4) is provided, depending on the volumetric fraction of the substances to be separated off. The adjustment is carried out in dependence on a preset condition. On the wall part (22) of the underflow nozzle (4), there is provided on the inside a flexible, in particular elastic, bellows or shell-like wall part, which can be inflated by a pressure medium. <IMAGE>
