In the production of sausages in an automatic filling device which introduces the sausage meat in portions through a filling tube into a tubular skin extending from the latter, end discs are inserted into the sausages by being individually deformed, by means of elastic deformation, into pot-shaped or conical hollow bodies which are open at the bottom and have reduced diameters and are introduced into a hollow cylinder which is enclosed by the skin material, from which cylinder they are pushed in a controlled fashion into the tubular skin in the region of the tip of the sausage, where they are released to adopt an approximately even shape. This makes it possible to use end discs with diameters which permit them to occupy the entire inside width of the skin when released.
