To filter contaminated liquids, such as motor oil or edible oil, a filter cartridge (62) is provided having two coaxial filter elements (12, 14). Between the filter elements (12, 14) is formed an intermediate space (32) which is sealed to the outside by a sleeve (10). The filter cartridge (62) is seated in a housing (64). The intermediate space (32) is connected to a liquid feed. The liquid, as shown by arrows, is forced axially through the filter elements (12, 14) and exits at the end surfaces (56, 58). In this manner, only filtered liquid collects in the housing (64). In addition, the housing (64) is unpressurised. <IMAGE>
